WHY TAKE THE TEST?

POTENTIAL IMMUNITY

IGM antibodies appear first in the blood, indicating a virus infection. The presence of IGG antibodies helps to determine whether a symptomatic or asymptomatic person has been infected with the virus. Based on the behavior of most viral infections, the presence of antibodies indicates that a person could develop potential immunity to the virus in question.

CONFIRM YOUR STATUS

Asymptomatic or cured patients are not eligible for a virus screening by PCR (the test done which determines if you have Covid-19 at this precise moment) in the public system in order to confirm their status.

Only patients presenting symptoms and respecting certain conditions are screened. Therefore, this antibody test in a testing lab is the only way to know if you have already potentially contracted the virus.

APPROVED BY HEALTH CANADA

The test offered by our testing lab , approved by Health Canada, is done by a world renowned laboratory.

The provincial and federal government, in its fight against COVID-19, advocates the approach of serological tests, since this will allow in particular to estimate the proportion of the population that has been exposed to the virus.

Covid Testing FAQ's

Why Take The Test ?

  1. Where are you located?
    1. Our address is 1970 Brock Rd, Pickering.  We are on the North West corner of Brock Rd. and Kingston Rd.  The building is a heritage building and you can come in through the yellow doors facing east.  We are in the same plaza as the Swiss Chalet.
  2. What’s the difference between the PCR test and the Rapid Antigen Test?
    1. Rapid Antigen test: This test detects protein fragments specific to the Coronavirus. You will receive your results within 30 minutes.  Please note that the Rapid Antigen test is NOT a diagnostic test so if you test positive on a Rapid Antigen test, you need to get a confirmatory PCR test through a provincial COVID testing centre (go to covidswab.lh.ca or call the Durham Health Connection Line at 905-668-2020).
    2. PCR test: PCR testing is considered the “gold standard” in SARS-CoV-2 detection. This test actually detects RNA (or genetic material) that is specific to the virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, even those who have no symptoms. The sample is taken by a nurse at Durham Manor and then it is delivered to an accredited laboratory where it is analyzed.  You will receive the result by the end of the next day, but same day results are also available if it is needed urgently.  NOTE: Same day service will incur additional fees and it needs to be completed by 12pm to receive the results by midnight.  IF your test comes back positive, the laboratory automatically notifies Public Health so expect to be contacted by Public Health within 1-2 days.
  3. How will I get the results?
    1. For Rapid Antigen testing, after you complete the nasal swab, you can return after 30 mins to receive the result with a stamp.
    2. For PCR testing, you will receive written instructions on how to access your results online when you come for the test
  4. Which test should I do? Do I get the PCR test or the Rapid Antigen test?
    1. For those travelling: This will depend on the requirements of your destination.  Generally a PCR test is required but some countries accept the Rapid Antigen test.  Please check each country’s website for the most up to date information.
  5. What if I have symptoms or have been in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19?
    1. Unfortunately we do not test anyone who has symptoms or who has been in contact with someone with COVID-19
    2. If that applies to you, please make an appointment with Lakeridge Health or other OHIP covered COVID Assessment Center.  To make an appointment with Lakeridge Health, you can go to covidswab.lh.ca.  If you have no internet access, you can call the Durham Health Connection Line (905-668-2020) for assistance in booking an appointment.
  6. When will my result be available?
    1. For Rapid Antigen testing, after you complete the nasal swab, you can return after 30 mins to receive the result with a stamp.
    2. For PCR testing, you will receive your result by the end of the next day.  Instructions will be given to you when you come for the test.  Same day results are available for additional costs but it must be arranged ahead of time.
  7. When should I get tested?
    1. For travelling: This will depend on the requirements of your destination.  Usually you will need a negative test within 72 hours or 3 days of either the departure or arrival date/time.  Please check each country’s website for the most up to date information. Below are some scenarios:
